Have you noticed some yellow or brown patches emerging in your grass, which had been perfectly green? Are you watering it carefully, but nothing seems to work? Careful! You might have a chinch bug infestation.

The chinch bug is the most common insect found in Quebec lawns and is considered a major lawn pest.

THE CHINCH BUG

The chinch bug is a small insect found in dry, sunny areas. It lives on the surface of your grass and feeds on the sap, leaving it dry and brownish.

Chinch bugs have a five-stage development and it is at the nymph phase that they cause the most damage.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

When it’s still a nymph, the chinch bug is red with a white stripe on its back. The adult insect measures 3/16 inches. It is flat, with white wings on its back.

HOW DOES IT REPRODUCE?

Adult chinch bugs survive the winter in turf thatch. In spring, they feed and mate. A couple of weeks later, females lay up to 170 eggs at the bottom of the lawn. Nymphs only take 4 to 6 weeks to become adults, and it’s during this transition stage that they are the most devastating to your lawn.

HOW DO I GET RID OF THEM?

If your lawn is infested with chinch bugs, you must act quickly! If you do nothing, the adult insects will soon attack your trees, hedges and plants. The next spring, they will mate, and your lawn will be twice as infested.

Don’t wait any longer! Get help from a professional who will detect chinch bugs and use the right insecticide to finally get rid of them.
